Pongal Celebrations in Hyderabad, India

It’s holiday season, and Hyderabad is living the holiday with a jolly and spirited uncountable. Pongal is traditionally dedicated to the Sun God Surya, and marks the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun from its southernmost-limit, a movement traditionally referred to as uttarayana. Traditional festivals are the most important events that take place in all Indian cities but each city has its favorites. Pongal is one of the most significant festivals of South India. People get on  the ‘terrace’ or roof the house to fly the fighter kites. There is drama, large groups accumulate, their is shouting cries of “kaateh” whenever a kite is cut, all Hyderabadis actively engage in kite flying.

And Bhogi is the day preceding Sankranti and Kanumu is the day after. On Bhogi day, in the early morning, a bonfire is lit up with waste before the traditional special bath. Pongali  is an important item during this festival.
